Abstract

Growing demand for optical lenses is the consequence of increasing electronic screen syndrome and aging population. And to treat and assist human eyes disorders. The industry involved in the production of optical lenses therefore requires continuous development. And an important step in the lens manufacturing process, which is the hard coating process. The abrasion- and scratch- resistance of coated lens surface can improve durability of lens life.

There are two alternatives in improving the quality of lens coatings as follows: (i) standard-performance specialty chemicals in 10-step hard coating process and (ii) high-performance specialty chemicals in 13-step hard coating process. The objective of this research is to study the economic feasibility of the alternatives of hard coating processes. Using the benefit-to-cost ratio, the first alternative of 13-step hard coating process requiring high-performance specialty chemicals is the most economically appropriate hard coating process.
